Half Pint Express: Alesha Zappitella Exclusive

Tonight on UFF Fight Pass, Invicta FC is giving the gift of vengeance with the scheduled rematch of Jinh Yu Frey vs Minna Grusander for the atomweight belt. Main event aside, WMMA Rankings wanted to shed some light on an up-and-coming fighter, Alesha Zappitella, who caught our eye during her Invicta debut last July at Invicta FC 30.
Zappitella is currently 4-0 and exploded onto the stage with a dominant win over Jillian Decoursey. Alesha is the type of fighter who likes to put all her attention the task at hand, rather than worry about what the future holds.

When asked if she felt like her victory over Jilian Decoursey gave her extra momentum going into her fight with Amber Brown, Alesha said, “I like to take it one fight at a time, not focus on my next fight, and learning and improving from my last fight. Beating Jillian was a huge step in my career, but that momentum has nothing to do with this fight other than building a fan base and getting my name out there.”

Rather than watching tape of her opponents, Alesha spends all her time in the gym, physically training for the upcoming fight. She told us: “I know that Amber brown is a very game opponent and is well rounded. I have watched some of her fights, but I do not like studying my opponents. I leave that to my coaches and training partners. I like to be aware of what to expect while focusing on being the best martial artist I can possibly be.”

Anyone who has watched a Zappitella fight automatically notices that she does something that is not seen much in mixed martial arts: when her opponent is grounded on her back, Alesha crouches down on one knee and waits until her opponent starts to rise before pouncing.

“When an opponent is on their back and I am standing I choose to ground myself, avoiding upkicks and forcing my opponent to grapple with me.”

When we suggested that the move be called ‘The Half Pint Express’ she said that she had heard some people calling it ‘Pulling A Zap’ but agreed our name for it was pretty cool.

At IFC 33, Zappitella will take on Amber “The Bully” Brown. Brown (7-4) recovered from a three-fight losing streak by defeating Tessa Simpson at Invicta FC 26 via armbar in first minute of the first round. One of the fights Brown lost was a championship match for the atomweight belt against Ayaka Hamasaki and another loss came to Ashley Yoder, who came in at one pound overweight.

Zappitella will have a lot on her hands as Brown returns to prove that the three fights she lost are a thing of the past. Be sure not to miss what is sure to be a brutal war between these two top notch fighters.
