Heavyweight queen Gabi Garcia wants to see RIZIN Fighting Federation introduce a women’s heavyweight championship belt. She feels this would increase the number of opportunities for fighters in her division.
This past week, Garcia has been involved in a back-and-forth media war against fellow heavyweight competitor, Oxana Gagloeva. However, she is now looking ahead and excited for her return to competition..
“We need a heavyweight belt. Many girls in my division deserve the opportunity to fight. I hope to be back soon.” Garcia told WMMA Rankings.
Garcia (4-0, 1 NC) is the number-one heavyweight in the world. She has been hailed as a pioneer of the sport, thanks to helping bring mainstream attention to female heavyweight competitors in combat sports. She has a 100% finish rate, owning victories of top contenders Destanie Yarbrough, Lei’D Tapa and Anna Maliukova. Other contenders in the division include Jazzy Gabert, Erica Grover and Kate Bloomfield.
Since the success of Garcia, several female heavyweights from other combat sports have announced plans to make the transition to MMA. Including 6″5ft kickboxing champion, Katya Kavaleva, multiple-time women’s boxing world champion, Carlette Ewell and BJJ heavyweight champion, Joaquina Bonfim. If RIZIN FF do create a women’s heavyweight title belt, it’s likely the number of women transitioning from other combat sports would increase.
