Renata Poa made a successful professional MMA debut on Saturday, defeating Brazil’s Ellen Carla Monteiro Rosa via unanimous decision. The victory put New Zealand’s Poa at number-three in the heavyweight world rankings.
It may have been Poa’s (1-0) professional debut, however she is by far one of the most experienced fighters in the developing yet fast growing division. She has been enjoying a very successful amateur career as part of New Zealand’s Princesses of Pain organization, taking out all the countries top heavyweights, with her sole loss coming by way of a disqualification, following a kick to a downed opponent.
The 31-year-old’s rise in the heavyweight rankings means she sits just behind RIZIN Fighting Federation stars Gabi Garcia (4-0, 1 NC) and Destanie Yarbrough (1-1). Poa believes she has what it takes to become the number-one ranked heavyweight fighter in the world. She cites Ronda Rousey as her inspiration for getting into MMA and trains closely with UFC heavyweight star, Mark Hunt.
