Surging women’s strawweight contender Felice Herrig is gearing up for a big 2018.
“Aside from Joanna, I’m the only strawweight who’s gone on a four-fight winning streak. That’s a fact,” Herrig told MMA Junkie Radio. “At this point, I want to fight somebody in the top ten. It doesn’t really make sense for me to keep fighting girls that are ranked below me. That’s the whole point. If I want to keep working my way up. I fight the most dangerous girls outside the top ten.”
“Lil’ Bulldog” feels that she has staked her claim in the division. After a tough 2015 loss to Paige VanZant, Herrig took some time off to reinvent herself. She returned in July of 2016 and has since racked up four impressive consecutive wins against the likes of Kailin Curran, Alexa Grasso, Justine Kish, and most recently, Cortney Casey.
The interviewers began to suggest some names to Felice about a possible next opponent— they mentioned Nina Ansaroff and Tecia Torres, however, Herrig has another name on her mind.
“For whatever reason, I really want to fight Karolina. I just think that would be an exciting fight. I think it would be fun. Stylistically, I really like that fight. She’s ranked above Tecia. It’s a good gauge for me.”
Though Kowalkiewicz is slated to face Jessica Andrade in 2018, it’s a fight that Herrig is optimistic she can secure.
Also in the interview, the blonde bombshell was complimentary of the division’s new champ— “Thug” Namajunas. “I think it gives hope and it opens up the division and makes it exciting again. Rose is the one that did it. You can’t take anything away from her. You’ve got to give props to Rose for taking out Joanna.”
Where do you see Herrig in the strawweight division? Does she deserve a title shot? Would you like to see Herrig vs Kowalkiewicz in the future?
