UFC fans call for bantamweight title showdown between Amanda Nunes and Tonya Evinger

UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes has made it known that she is keen to defend her belt as soon as she can, however there has been difficulty in finding an opponent.

UFC fans want to see Amanda Nunes vs. Tonya Evinger.

Raquel Pennington was originally scheduled to face Nunes for the belt at December 30’s UFC 219 event, however she was forced to withdraw due to leg injury. Nunes was then eyeing Holly Holm as an opponent, however the latter will be moving up to featherweight in a bid to take the 145-pound title from Cris Cyborg.

Other contenders in the top-ten are also unavailable to fight. Valentina Shevchenko has already lost twice to Nunes and recently announced plans to move down to flyweight. Julianna Pena is currently expecting a child. Ronda Rousey is rumored to be joining the WWE. Sara McMann is coming off a submission loss to Ketlen Vieira, the latter will be facing Cat Zingano in March 2018. Meanwhile, Alexis Davis and Liz Carmouche will be moving down to flyweight for their December 9 bout.

WMMA Rankings has been receiving a number of tweets suggesting opponents for Nunes, the name which is occurring the most and receiving the biggest reaction is former Invicta FC bantamweight champion, Tonya Evinger. Take a look at some of the tweets below.

Evinger (19-6-0, 1 NC) was coming off an incredible ten-fight winning streak before losing out in her UFC debut against featherweight champion, Cris Cyborg. Despite the loss, the former Invicta FC bantamweight champion remains one of the most dominant fighters of all time at 135-pounds.

  1. Even though Tonya is not even in your top 10 bantamweight rankings and has fought no one in the UFC at 135, that is probably the fight that will be made. The UFC can take advantage of marketing UFC champ vs. Invicta champ. Personally, I’d prefer to see Tonya fight someone in the top 10 first, especially since her earlier losses were to Alexis Davis and Sara McMann, both ranked towards the bottom of the top 10 currently.

IMO, Amanda’s inconclusive victory over Valentina justifies a rubber match first. I’m sure Valentina wouldn’t mind delaying her drop to 125 for another chance at the title. An excellent match-up for Tonya would be a rematch against Sara McMann to help determine whether Tonya has really improved that much or whether she has just been fighting inferior competition.

    1. Why don’t you tell me how you really feel, Tonya? Certainly some people grow. Amanda lost to both Alexis and Cat and has shown tremendous growth since then. Some people don’t. Holly has shown little growth since her destruction of Ronda. Maybe she’ll surprise us in her fight with Cris.

Unfortunately, Evinger has faced no one at 135 on a UFC top 10 level, with the possible exception of Yana Kunitskaya, since her losses to McMann and Davis so her growth is hard to determine. Are you concerned that she might lose against someone in the top 10? A rematch against McMann should help to show just how much she has grown.
