Last week it was announced that popular lightweight contender King Reina is set to return to action on May 20th when she competes on the DEEP JEWELS 16 card. Her opponent has finally been announced as Germany’s Kristin Handel.
Handel (1-0-0) will be coming off an over four-year layoff, she made her professional debut back in February 2013, taking out Katharina Albinus by way of split decision. She trains out of German Top Team and has previously competed as a featherweight, she will make her 155-lb lightweight debut for this fight.
Meanwhile, King Reina is currently 3-0-0 in her professional mixed martial arts career and has looked nothing short of sensational in all her performances. She made her professional debut in November 2016, submitting Eriko Iwamoto in the first round, following an Armbar. This past February she dominated a UFC veteran in Shayna Baszler to pick up the unanimous decision victory. She returned just two weeks ago to defeat a heavyweight opponent in Jazzy Gabert at RIZIN Fighting Federation 5.
Reina has made it no secret that she plans to be the woman to put the 155-pound lightweight division on the map. Much like in the way that Ronda Rousey did for the 135-pound bantamweight division and Cris Cyborg with the 145-pound featherweight division. She possesses world-class Judo skills, as displayed by the way she was able to takedown her heavyweight opponent with ease. She is currently the number three ranked 155-pound lightweight competitor in the world, behind Bobbi-Jo Dalziel and Sarah Patterson.
