Saturday night at Dynasty Combat Sports 37, Jozette Cotton defeated Sarah Patterson by way of a unanimous decision to become the first ever women’s lightweight champion of the world. All three judges scored the contest 48-47 in favor of Cotton.
The fight was a thrilling back-and-forth five-round war. Patterson clearly dominated the first two rounds, whilst Cotton clearly won the final two rounds. The third round appeared to be very close with both women remaining very cautious, however the judges ultimately gave the round to Cotton.
Cotton improves her record to 7-1-0. After dominating the lightweight division for many years, the 29-year-old lost a unanimous decision to Bobbi-Jo Dalziel last October, prompting an almost one-year layoff. Tonight she successfully made her hugely anticipated return to the cage, taking out the current number-one ranked lightweight in Patterson. A rematch with Dalziel is no doubt a fight which is highly likely for Cotton’s first title defense.
Patterson sees an end to the four-fight win streak she had built up, falling to 5-3-0. Prior to tonight’s loss, she picked up four consecutive finishes, with wins over Tamikka Brents, Killastina Makihele, Erica Grover and Kate Bloomfield.
