At the UFC 222 post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White liked the idea of skipping Amanda Nunes vs Raquel Pennington for the bantamweight title, in favor of booking Amanda Nunes vs Cris Cyborg for the featherweight title.
Reigning bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes was slated to meet top contender Raquel Pennington at UFC 224 in Brazil in May. After Justino’s dominant win in the UFC 222 headliner against Yana Kunitskaya, that may no longer be the plan.
“I think I will,” White told media when he was asked if he would book a champion versus champion fight between Nunes and Cyborg instead of proceeding with a bantamweight title match between Nunes and Pennington.
“I mean, she just fought. So once the adrenaline goes down, she’s got to get checked out and make sure she is 100%. And I just think her and Nunes is the fight that needs to happen. Nunes wants the fight, she wants the fight, I want the fight, and I’m sure the fans want to see it, too. So we’ll get that one going,” he added.
Pennington was previously forced out of a verbally ‘agreed upon’ title fight at UFC 219 due to injury. The TUF 18 alum has been out of action since November of 2016– where she secured her title shot with the biggest victory of her career, a decision win over former champ Miesha Tate.
Nothing has been finalized yet. Though the bantamweight division has significantly thinned out since the flyweight division opened, the title scheme is getting interesting with potential streaking challengers like Ketlen Vieira and Marion Reneau looming in the wings.
