Cynthia Calvillo out, Invicta champ Brianna Van Buren in against Livia Renata Souza

At Invicta FC Phoenix Rising Series 1, Brianna Van Buren became the new strawweight champion

Brianna Van Buren (8-2), fresh off of winning Invicta’s Phoenix Rising one-night strawweight tournament, has been promoted to the UFC to face Livinha Souza (13-1), another former Invicta veteran who has Octagon wins over Alex Chambers (by guillotine choke) and Sarah Frota (split decision).

ESPN+ 13 takes place on July 13 in Sacramento, Calif. The home-city fighter, Calvillo, was forced off the card due to a broken foot. Her recovery time is estimated at six weeks.

Van Buren is the first woman to win a major promotion’s one-night MMA tournament. She won two of the fights by submission against Kailin Curran and Manjit Kolekar, and one by unanimous decision against Julianna Lima. She will have an ample opportunity to impress her new employers if get a victory against the always dangerous Souza.

    1. I give Shannon and the team so much credit– every time they crown a new champion they are plucked by the UFC and left vacant again!

      1. For sure ! At least at strawweight. Flyweight and bantamweight not quite as rapidly, ha ha . Porto should have been in the UFC a while ago at flyweight.
