Cris Cyborg talks challenging Julia Budd for the Bellator MMA featherweight title on January 25

Cris Cyborg will challenge Julia Budd for the featherweight title at the upcoming Bellator 238 event on January 25.

Cyborg left the UFC last year to explore free agency, ultimately choosing to sign with Bellator MMA.

Cyborg (21-2-0) will be making her promotional debut after leaving the UFC last year. The 34-year-old, a pioneer of the sport who has been competing as a professional since 2005, owns victories over some of the biggest names in WMMA history including Gina Carano, Holly Holm, Marloes Coenen, Tonya Evinger and Felicia Spencer.

Ahead of the upcoming fight, Cyborg recently spoke to reporters at her gym about her opponent in Julia Budd.

I think she’s a great fighter,” Cyborg said. “She’s the champion at 145 pounds and she’s been a champion a long time. She’s undefeated eight years. She’s going to be a great challenge for me … I always like to challenge myself if I have the opportunity. I think it’s a big thing to sign with Bellator.”

Cyborg has been competing as a professional MMA fighter since 2005.

After fighting Budd, Cyborg says her dream is to compete in a women’s grand prix.

My focus first is Julia,” Cyborg said. “If I had the opportunity, I think one dream I have is to make a grand prix. I think being in Bellator, Scott (Coker) would be open to that – making more than one fight a night.

I think it’s going to be a Japan event. I mean, shoot boxing has a lot of fighters over there that do that. I think it’s going to be a dream – a dream coming true for me.

Bellator 238 takes place on Saturday January 25, 2020, from The Forum in Inglewood, California, United States. The main card will be aired live on DAZN from 10pm EST.
