UFC featherweight queen Cris Cyborg plans to shift her focus from MMA to boxing once her contract is up.
With two fights left on her UFC contract, the 32-year-old Brazilian champion wants to trade the octagon for a boxing ring.
“Of course, I need time for training. I think four to six months of training– that would be perfect since I have two fights left in MMA, and then I can focus on boxing,” Cyborg told Kevin Iole. “I’m very excited.”
The pound-for-pound great plans to fulfill her UFC contract and leaves the door for an MMA return open: “After these fights, I will do a boxing fight- after these two fights left. Maybe I’ll come back [to MMA], but not for now. I want to use this time and make more boxing fights. This is my dream.”
What will happen to her featherweight title? With UFC President Dana White exploring ZUFFA Boxing, Cyborg hopes the UFC will work with her. She says, “I would like to work with them– if the UFC works it and I can do boxing fights and still have the belt and come back like [Conor] McGregor did [against Floyd Mayweahter]. Let’s see.”
Women’s boxing history was made this past weekend when undefeated champion Cecilia Braekhus successfully defended her title against Kali Reis in the televised co-main event on HBO Boxing. Donning her UFC gold, Cyborg was in attendance wearing a shirt that read “Cyborg vs Braekhus Coming Summer 2019”.
