The number 1 pound-for-pound female fighter on the planet, Cris ‘Cyborg’ is keeping all her options open. Speaking to us earlier today she was very complimentary of the UFC’s rivals saying “I love Bellator“, she then added “I WILL fight at 145“.
UFC currently does not have a 145lb division, they have told the press many times that they have no plans to add one, claiming there is not enough depth in the division. ‘Cyborg’ has made it a point this week to tell the press that she will never fight at a 140 catchweight again. Her last two fights for the UFC were at the 140 catchweight against unranked opponents Leslie Smith and Lina Lansberg.
There are currently many girls who fight at 145lbs, as well as girls who fight at 155lbs and would move down in weight. The UFC claiming there is not enough depth in the division is completely untrue. ‘Cyborg’ is no doubt a big draw, and fans always tune in to see if her opponent will finally be the one to beat her. The UFC not creating the division is ludicrous.
The UFC and it’s associates have poked fun and tried to diminish Cyborg’s legacy for a long time. In April 2014 UFC president Dana White said “when I saw [Cyborg] at the MMA Awards, she looked like Wanderlei Silva in a dress and heels. And she did, did she not? Who wants to dispute that she didn’t look like Wanderlei? She was walking up the stairs, jacked up on steroids beyond belief and looked like Wanderlei Silva in a dress and heels.” In February 2015 Ronda Rousey said “The thing is, someone who cheats and makes things easier for themselves is always going to try and make things easier for themselves, stop taking f**king steroids and make weight“, this was during a period that Cyborg was completely clean. In 2015 Joe Rogan joked about Justino having a penis. These are just a few of many examples where the UFC have disrespected ‘Cyborg’, and yet she still works for the company.
With Cybog stating she will only fight at 145lbs, her best current options are Bellator or going back to Invicta FC. Bellator plan to introduce a 145lb championship belt in 2017, they currently have many of the top Featherweights in the world under contract including Marloes Coenen, Julia Budd, Arlene Blencowe, Alexis Dufresne as well as top rising prospects Talita Noguiera, Roberta Paim, Rebecca Ruth and more.
A fight that ‘Cyborg’ has been very vocal about wanting for a long time is against former UFC Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, the chances of which happening seem pretty slim if you look at it realistically.
Cris ‘Cyborg’ is one of the pioneers of Women’s MMA and is behind the success of it. She deserves better. One has to wonder if the UFC/Zuffa are simply keeping Cris under contract in order to keep her away from other promotions, in which she would receive more opportunities.
