Carla Esparza hopes to inspire healthy weight-cuts

Former UFC strawweight champion, Carla Esparza, was one of UFC 219’s big winners when she handed hot prospect Cynthia Calvillo her first loss. Earlier today, the inaugural champ took to Instagram to share some details and tips from her recent weight chit. Check out the “Cookie Monster’s” post!

She wrote; “2 days before weigh-ins, only 4lbs over my weight limit. I don’t believe in big weight cuts, they are horrible for your body. I hope that any young athlete who looks up to me will follow in my footsteps in this regard. Making weight should be an effort over a long period of exercise and dieting (I use @dacikfitfoods), not drastic measures to cut weight. *discipline*. I go into almost every fight much smaller than my opponent, I’ve known of someone I fought who got as big as 155lbs. Work on your skills at wrestling/fighting, not on your skills at cutting crazy amounts of weight. Just my opinion. ❤️“

One of MMA’s top wrestlers, Esparza, was the inaugural UFC strawweight champion as well as the inaugural Invicta FC strawweight champion. After losing her title at UFC 185 to Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Carla has gone 3-1. With her most recent victory, Esparza finds herself back in title contention.
