Ireland’s Katie Taylor has defeated Nina Meinke of Germany in Saturday’s world title eliminator at Wembley Stadium.
Taylor forced a seventh-round stoppage due to a cut above Meinke’s eye to collect the WBA lightweight inter-continental title, her first belt in the paid ranks. She is now considered to be next in line for a shot at the world title.
The 30-year-old, who won gold at the 2012 Olympics, is expected to face Uruguay’s WBA world lightweight champion Cecilia Comunales later in the year.
Taylor’s promoter talks about when Taylor’s next fight will be.
“Next will be America in June or July – she must box there,” promoter Eddie Hearn said. “We’re potentially looking at the Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev card or headlining ourselves.”
Taylor, from Bray in County Wicklow, has won all five of her bouts since turning professional in October 2016.
Taylor and Meinke battled on the undercard of the Joshua VS Klitschko event, taking place at the Wembley Stadium in London, England.
