Bellator champ Julia Budd hoping next title defense is against Conor McGregor’s training partner Sinead Kavanagh

Bellator featherweight champion Julia Budd is hoping her next challenger will be Conor McGregor’s close friend and training partner, Sinead Kavanagh.

Budd wants Ireland’s Sinead Kavanagh next.

Budd (12-2) successfully retained her featherweight title in the main event of Bellator 202 on Friday night, knocking out Talita Nogueira in the third-round to keep hold of the belt. Following the big victory she took to the microphone and called out Kavanagh as the single person she’d like to fight next.

Kavanagh trains at the SBG Ireland gym along with UFC superstar Conor McGregor.

Kavanagh (5-2) is coming off an impressive first-round knockout victory over Maria Casanova at the Bellator 187 event last November. The SBG Ireland standout has never been finished in her MMA career and has won three of her five professional victories by way of knockouts. Her most recent loss was a controversial split decision to Arlene Blencowe almost a year ago at the Bellator 182 event. It should be noted that Blencowe herself is one of Budd’s toughest opponents to date and took her to a split decision last December.

“The Jewel” Julia Budd clearly believes Kavanagh is most deserving of the next shot and seems keen to fight again as soon as possible. Friday night’s dominant performance against Nogueira marks Budd’s second successful title defense. She won the belt in March of 2017, knocking out Marloes Coenen in the main event of Bellator 174.

    1. I’m not sure “ducking” is the correct word given that Cris is currently in a different organization. I thought I heard her say, “Cyborg! I hear your contract is about up over there in the UFC. When it is, how about you coming over here and we’ll show them what a real fight’s like.” But then I woke up and realized it was just a dream. She managed to avoid Cris for years as the #2 contender at Strikeforce and Invicta. I have a feeling if Cris moved over to Bellator, Julia would figure that it’s time to retire.
