Tonight, at Bellator 212 in Honolulu, Hawaii, flyweights did battle as former title challenger Alejandra Lara returned to action to face unbeaten contender Juliana Velasquez.
RECAP: Colombia’s ‘Azul’ takes on Brazil’s Velasquez! Lara opens up early with really unorthodox movement. Normally an orthodox fighter, Alejandra comes out in the southpaw stance. Velasquez isn’t throwing much at all– she is instead stalking forward and looking to counter with power shots. A scramble at the end of the round. A close first five minutes. Juliana is coming out more aggressive in the second round. Pressing the pace and throwing more punches. Velasquez scores two takedowns in the second round. She worked in some ground and pound but let Lara back up after a short moment. In the final minute of the round, Juliana turned up the heat and they began to brawl. Lara landed a solid right hand but Velasquez got the better of the exchange. Right now it’s Lara’s speed versus Velasquez’s strength. Going to the third and final round! Juliana is very composed. There is a clinch about halfway through the round. Lara, creatively, rolls through looking for a knee bar. She doesn’t get it and transitions to an inverted knee bar attempt. Juliana defends and they are soon up to their feet. They brawl until the final bell!
Juliana Velasquez def. Alejandra Lara via split-decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27).
