This Saturday’s UFC 223 event will showcase an exciting women’s flyweight fight on its early preliminary card when “Rowdy” Bec Rawlings takes on Ashlee “Rebel Girl” Evans-Smith.
Rawlings (7-7) will be making her second appearance in the UFC’s newly minted flyweight division following a split decision loss to Jessica-Rose Clark at the UFC Fight Night 121 event last November. Despite losing the close fight, Rawlings certainly showed improvements to her game, evidencing the fact that the Australian performs better when cutting less weight. Saturday will give the 29-year-old an opportunity to showcase her continued improvements and potentially earn herself a spot in the rankings.
Evans-Smith (5-3) will be making her first appearance as a flyweight following a run at bantamweight in which she enjoyed success with wins over Marion Reneau and Veronica Macedo but also facing setbacks when up against Raquel Pennington, Ketlen Vieira and Sarah Moras. The 30-year-old believes she can become a world champion at 125-pounds when faced up against smaller girls. She gained worldwide media attention in 2013 after becoming the first and only woman to date to defeat the infamous transgender fighter Fallon Fox.
Heading into the fight, Evans-Smith has publicly slammed Rawlings on multiple occasions when speaking to the press. She says that her coaches are “unimpressed” with Rawlings and claims that gameplanning for this fight has been “easier” than normal. She has also branded Rawlings “embarrassing”, “raunchy” and says she’s “given MMA a bad name”. Rawlings has not officially responded to any of Evans-Smith’s comments as of yet.
UFC 223 takes place on April 7 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, United States. The early preliminary card featuring Rawlings vs. Evans-Smith will be aired live on UFC Fight Pass from 6:15pm EST.
