Ashley Cummins returns to action on Saturday when she battles Jinh Yu Frey at Invicta FC 24. The fight will serve as a title eliminator, with the winner challenging for the atomweight world title.
Cummins (5-3-0) discussed her opponent during a recent interview with Cage Side Press. She is very excited to have been given the opportunity to fight such a high-ranked opponent in Frey.
“It’s a good match-up. I think Frey and I are two of the top atomweights in the world. I’m excited for it, I have a lot of respect for her as a fighter, she’s very well-rounded, she’s very tough. This is what I’ve been working for for ten years. I want to fight the best in the world, and that’s Frey” Cummins said.
Heading into the fight, the 29-year-old feels as though she is being overlooked by the fans. She is ready to “shock the world“.
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity to be in the cage with one of the best in the world” she continued. “I’m a huge underdog, and I’m pretty excited to shock the world. Everyone wants to see her get that rematch for that belt, and everyone’s looking past me. None of the pressure’s on me, it’s all on her. No one expects me to win, everyone wants to see her fight for that belt, so I’m just ready to go in there and have fun.”
“I’m the huge underdog, she’s got all the pressure on her. At the end of it all? My hand is going to be raised at the end of the fight.”
The fight is an exciting one for fans of the division. Frey, the number-three ranked atomweight fighter in the world, will be looking to successfully take out a rising contender and receive what she believes is her rightful rematch for the atomweight world title. Meanwhile, a victory for Cummins, the number-ten ranked atomweight fighter in the world, would see her skyrocket up the world rankings and solidify her place as a force in the division, leading to a title shot presumably later this year.
