Antonina Shevchenko explains why she’ll enter Dana White’s Contender Series at same weight as sister Valentina

In a move that is causing added interest where’s there’s already tons of it, Antonina Shevchenko is trying to enter the UFC fighting in the same weight class as her sister Valentina.

The Shevchenko sisters are multiple-time muay thai world champions.

Antonina has confirmed that her upcoming fight in Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series will be at flyweight. Her sister, Valentina, is currently the Number 1 flyweight contender, and is expected to fight champion Nicco Montano later this year.

However, “La Pantera” also makes it clear that a sister versus sister fight is not on the horizon, nor will it ever happen.

Of course, we’ll never fight as sisters. Valentina now is No. 1 contender at flyweight. I’m sure in a few months she will be the champion of this division. If I win this fight in Contender Series, I will be just entering UFC. There will be a hard, long way before you become No. 3, No. 5, No. 1. it’ll be a long way and hard way, so we’ll see.” Shevchenko said.

As for Antonina’s reason for her fighting as that weight, her reasoning is simple –  she’s doing it because she doesn’t want to be at a disadvantage because most fighters (male and female) fight lower than their natural weight class.

“They cut weight so much and the girls at 135 they are too big for me.  It’ll be better for me to fight at 125 in UFC.” she said.

Her Tuesday Night Contender Series fight has already been confirmed for June against Silvana Gomez Juarez, however the exact day in June has not yet been announced. Before then, Antonina will be defending her Lion Fight Muay Thai Super Lightweight Championship against Clare Baxter. After that, if she wins her MMA fight, she will concentrate on MMA for the foreseeable future. And she indicates that she has no qualms about leaving her other fighting pursuits behind.

“If it will happen, then yes of course. UFC is a huge, huge organization and has the best fighters in the world of MMA. It’ll be a great challenge for me as a martial artist.” she said.

  1. Assuming both sisters are successful in their respective fights, I expect Valentina to once again challenge Amanda and leave flyweight to Antonina.

  2. Excessive weight cutting is both dangerous and, by gaming the system, defeats the whole purpose of weight classifications. UFC needs to adopt rules to restrict this practice.
