Andy Nguyen will compete in the biggest fight of her career tonight when she battles Rena Kubota in the main event of ‘RIZIN 2017 in Fukuoka’. The fight will serve as a first-round bout in the eight-woman super atomweight tournament, the organization’s first ever female tournament.
Nguyen (5-4-0) recently spoke to CJ’s Report and discussed what it would mean for her to emerge victorious in the tournament. The winner will receive close to $100,000 dollars.
“Winning the whole tournament is something I’ve never dreamed of. I saw Cro Cop win at age 40 at New Years Eve and I was so impressed. I can buy my mommy a house so she doesn’t have to work anymore” Nguyen explained.
The 35-year-old actively competes for King of the Cage, as well as RIZIN Fighting Federation. In her last showing she lost her KOTC atomweight world title to Melissa Karagianis via a unanimous decision. Nguyen reveals she was suffering from an injury in her last fight and was not able to perform at her full potential. She is confident she will be much better prepared for tonight’s showdown.
“I had a bad elbow. I should have not taken the fight. I was on prednisone. I even asked the doctor to clear me. I was fighting 65-70% of my potential for 5 rounds. I don’t regret it, I’m healthier now” Nguyen revealed.
Nguyen discussed a number of other topics, including her upcoming opponent, how she first got into MMA, training with Andrea Lee at the Karate Mafia and lots more. Click HERE to view the full interview.
