Jozette Cotton returns to action at this Thursday’s Professional Fighters League 6 event when she battles the highly-touted Olympic gold medallist, Kayla Harrison.
Cotton (8-1), also known as “The #1 Headbusta”, has been dominating the scene at 155-pounds and above since 2012. The 30-year-old has finished half of her career wins by way of knockouts, including two which came in the very first-round. She’s currently the number-one ranked women’s 155-pound lightweight fighter in the world, with her most notable victory coming in September 2017 when she defeated Sarah Patterson to capture the inaugural DCS lightweight title.
As Cotton prepares for her most high-profile fight to date, WMMA Rankings takes a look back at the career of one of the greatest female lightweight fighters of all time.
Professional Debut vs. Kate Bloomfield (Improved to 1-0)
Cotton made her professional debut at the Disorderly Conduct 11 event in September 2012, earning herself the second-round TKO win over Kate Bloomfield.
Second fight vs. Nikita Netjes (Improved to 2-0)
Cotton made her second professional MMA appearance, again for Disorderly Conduct, this time for their seventeenth event in March 2013. The #1 Headbusta once again picked up the TKO victory, this time in the very first-round against Nikita Netjes.
Third fight vs. Elshaddai Cleffman (Improved to 3-0)
For her third professional MMA appearance, Cotton fought at the Midwest Championship 7 event in June 2013, picking up one of her most impressive finishes to date, a first-round knockout over Elshaddai Cleffman.
Fourth fight vs. Jessica Halverson (Improved to 4-0)
In January 2014, Cotton made her Dynasty Combat Sports debut at the organisation’s sixth event, earning the unanimous decision victory over veteran of the 155-pound division, Jessica Halverson.
Fifth fight vs. Holly Lawson (Improved to 5-0)
In October 2014, Cotton received the opportunity to fight on the big stage at the Bellator 129 event and successfully earned the unanimous decision win over Holly Lawson.
Sixth fight vs. Killastina Makihele (Improved to 6-0)
With no further plans at the time for Bellator MMA to host fights in Cotton’s weight division, the hard-hitter went back to Dynasty Combat Sports, an organization she would now stay with and go on to have huge success. At the DSC 13 event in January 2015, she picked up another dominant decision win, this time over Killastina Makihele.
Seventh fight vs. Bobbi-Jo Dalziel (dropped to 6-1)
At the Dynasty Combat Sports 29 event in October 2016, Cotton suffered her first and only career setback to date, a unanimous decision loss to undefeated Canadian, Bobbi-Jo Dalziel (3-0). Despite losing, Cotton certainly displayed her toughness and heart.
Eighth fight vs. Sarah Patterson (Improved to 7-1)
After an almost twelve-month hiatus from the sport, Cotton returned from her first loss at the Dynasty Combat Sports 29 event in September of last year, defeating 155-pound veteran, Sarah Patterson, to capture the inaugural lightweight title.
Ninth fight vs. Jenn Norris (Improved to 8-1)
Following her successful lightweight title win, Cotton returned just three months later in December to take on Jenn Norris at the Dynasty Combat Sports 38 event, earning the fourth-round TKO win.
PFL 6 takes place this Thursday August 16 from the Ocean Resort Casino Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States. The main card featuring Harrison vs. Cotton will be aired live on NBC Sports from 10pm EST.
