3 Fights We Need In The Flyweight Division

Women’s MMA has given fans of the sport a ton of great fights as of late. With the recent addition of the Women’s Flyweight division in the UFC we will most likely get even more amazing fights. There is a mixture of veteran fighters and new blood in the 125 pound division that will keep it exciting and fresh.

This is a list of 3 match-ups in MMA’s Women’s Flyweight division that we should hope to see in the near future.

UFC Flyweight Champion Nicco Montano versus Valentina Shevchenko

This would be a fight between a virtually unknown fighter and a proven title contender. Nicco Montano (4-2) was unknown to most before she took the UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter house by storm – where she wound up winning the Inaugural UFC Flyweight championship. While the champion is fairly new to the MMA game, Valentina Shevchenko (15-3) is not.

Montano wound up winning the UFC Flyweight championship by beating some of the divisions best in the TUF house; Lauren Murphy, Montana Stewart, Barb Honchak and finally Roxanne Modafferi in the title fight. Montano is a former King of the Cage Flyweight champion, where she won the title in just her 4’th professional MMA fight. 2 fights later, not including TUF, Montano was crowned UFC Flyweight champion – a tremendous feat considering it was just her 6’th professional fight.

Valentina Shevchenko is one of Women’s MMA’s best strikers. She is best when counter punching. Shevchenko is a former Muay Thai champion with 3 wins over former UFC Strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in amateur Muay Thai fights. Shevchenko has competed for the UFC Bantamweight title against champion Amanda Nunes, where many think she did enough to win the fight. There is no doubt a near-win against one of WMMA’s best puts Shevchenko in contention for a title fight in a new division.

A fight between Nicco Montano and Valentina Shevchenko would make for a great standup battle. Although Montano is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, she is best on her feet. The go-to style of fighting for Montano is boxing and for Shevchenko it is Muay Thai Kickboxing. It’s safe to say the champion and the challenger are both very good on their feet. And that is most likely where the fight would stay for the 25 minutes or less that it would go.

Invicta FC Flyweight Champion Jennifer Maia versus Alexis Davis

A matchup between two of the best WMMA Flyweight fighters in the world would be great for the sport. Jennifer Maia (15-4-1) is Invicta FC’s dominant Flyweight champion. Alexis Davis (19-7) has been one of the best in Women’s MMA for years.

Invicta champion Jennifer Maia is on a six fight win streak – 3 in the Invicta promotion. Maia is a product of the world famous Chute Boxe Academy in Brazil. Jennifer Maia is one of the divisions most versatile fighters having won numerous fights by strikes and submissions.

Alexis Davis has been one of Women MMA’s mainstays. She has fought, beaten and lost to some of the best in the sport. Davis was once a Bantamweight title contender when she faced former champion Ronda Rousey – where she would end up losing. Since the loss to Rousey, Davis has won 3 of 4 fights and is now on a two fight win streak.

This fight would put both women in immediate title contention to fight whomever the champion is. The UFC needs get Jennifer Maia a fight and Alexis Davis is the perfect opponent.

Bellator Champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane versus KSW Champion Ariane Lipski

Ilima-Lei Macfarlane (7-0) has 7 professional fights while Ariane Lipski (10-3) has 13. Both are young (Macfarlane is 27, Lipski is 24) and marketable. Both are champions in the Flyweight division. A fight between the two would be epic.

Inaugural Bellator Flyweight champion Illima-Lei Macfarlane has been fighting professionally in MMA since just 2015. Bellator has done a great job in developing a budding star and putting Macfarlane in the promotions first Flyweight bout. In her six fights with the Bellator promotion, Macfarlane has finished four by submission. A product of 10’th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, Macfarlane has shown that she is game to go to the ground and finish. With just 7 fights, Illima-Lei Macfarlane is already one of the best in the Flyweight division.

Being just 24 years of age and already a champion in one of the sports top promotions, Ariane Lipski is headed to superstardom. Dubbed “The Violence Queen” for a reason, Lipski has finished 6 of her 10 wins by strikes or punches. In her last two bouts, Lispki has shown tolerance to learn, having won by submission. Simply put, Ariane Lipski is incredibly talented but shows she is willing to keep learning.

Bellator needs to make a move on signing Ariane Lipski before the UFC does. They already have one of the best up-and-coming Flyweights as their champion, with a Lipski signing they would show the MMA world Bellator is taking the Women’s Flyweight division seriously. If Bellator does indeed sign Lipski, a fight with Macfarlane wouldn’t be too far off. This fight may not headline but it will garner attention from fans. Illima-Lei Macfarlane versus Ariane Lipski is a true dream match-up.
